Jean Arp: Human Concretion

Human Concretion
Stone
1933, 22" x 31 " x 21"
Kunsthaus, Zurich, Switzerland

When Arp said, 'Art is a fruit that grows in man, like a fruit on a plant, or a child in its mother's womb,' he could have had this sculpture in mind. This smooth biomorphic shape is one of a series of sculptures he made when he began to work in free standing sculpture, carving and molding a variety of substances.
This sculpture is in two parts, the upper human figure and the lower angled base shape. The figure rests on three breast-like points, and it is playful and unlike a real human figure. The three dominant shapes could be alternatively breast, nose, head, arm, hip, shoulder, hand. In simplifying the form, Arp gives us many choices of interpretation, and play for the imagination. The base has many possibilities as well; it could be bed, lake, tub, hill, table.
