Christ in the Sepulcher (detail), Guarded by Angels
William Blake
c.1805
Pencil, Pen and Ink, and Watercolor

The gold and pink cheeked angels are looking down, toward a Christ figure, and their wings are stretched on high. The composition of this beautiful painting is symmetrical and perfectly balanced, with the dresses and wings of the angels forming a triangle with the reclining Christ. The detail here shows the serene expression on the faces of the angels and the flowing motion of their hair. Their position may be static, but their hair indicates energy and excitement in the presence of God's spirit.
