Louise Bourgeois: Femme Maison

Femme Maison
Two Drawings, Ink on Paper
19445-47, 91.3em x 35.6cm and 23.2c, x 9.2cm

These drawings show the skill and imagination of the artist in the 1940s, long before Bourgeois received acclaim for her work. Bourgeois was not celebrated as an important artist until she was in her 70s and had an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The subject matter here seems to be the woman's identity and tie to her domestic role in the home. The woman's body is not idealized, but is a structure with sexual parts that blends into the box-like house.
