A Midsummer Night's Dream
Marc Chagall
c.1939, 45" x 35"
Oil on Canvas
Begun
in 1930, Chagall did not complete this painting until 1939. The
two characters in the painting could be Bottom and Titania from
Shakespeare's play Midsummer Night's Dream. Chagall was drawn
to the hybrid, half animal, half human, characters which he painted
earlier in paintings of circus themes. It also could be a version
of beauty and the beast. The small red devil or fairy is the
most dynamic image in the composition as she gestures and seems
to be encouraging the romance. Only the paleness of the woman
subdues the yellow faced beast and exciting colors of purples
and greens. |
