Self Portrait With Seven Fingers
Oil on Canvas
1912-13 , 128cm x 107cm
Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam
This
is a very colorful and happy artist painting with so many fingers
a scene from his childhood village. One can see the influence
of Cubism, but it is a great deal of fantasy and spectacular
form and color. How does one make a still portrait of oneself
with so much energy and excitement?
The
artist is so excited that he looks like he is going to climb on the
easel. He gestures with such enthusiasm that his hand has seven fingers.
Even the pictures on the wall are bubbling up with clouds and moving
onto the painting he is working on. The artist is dressed for a party
and only the serious look in his eye tells you that he is concentrating
and at work. |
