Two Cherubs (a detail of the Sistine Madonna)

Raffaello Sanzio Raphael
c.1513-1514
Oil on panel. 265 x 196 cm
Dresden Gallery, Germany

Raphael's Two Cherubs is a detail of the larger painting the Sistine Madonna. (See Sistine Madonna). The chubby bodies and the soft skin make the cherubs are appear young and innocent, yet their focused stares and body positions give them a sense of maturity. The cherub on the left appears to be in deep thought as he stares upward to the Madonna and Child, while the cherub on the right appears to look upon them all, with graceful awe.
