Max Ernst: The Woman Bird

The Woman Bird
Collage and Guache on Paper
1921, 18.5cm x 10.6cm
Private Collection

Ernst was a master at collage and made collage a favored medium for the Surrealists. Here we see Ernst's obsession with birds and a figure as if out of Hieronymous Bosch painting. The woman stands in an overgrown pod, one leg sprouting a feather and holding a bird under her arm. Another bird erotically snuggles between her legs, the down of its feathers matching the down of her pubic hair. We guess this art is about nature, women, and a man's erotic imagination. She has a collar around her headless neck which leads one to think that perhaps he is sympathizing with female as trapped.
