Max Ernst: Attirement of the Bride

Attirement of the Bride
Oil on Canvas
1940, 129.6cm x 96.3cm
Peggy Guganheim Collection

This spectacular painting is Ernst's imaginative surreal depiction of the loss of a young woman's virginity. The dark green bird on the left holds a spear like a phallus toward the bride's vulva. The bride is in transformation and a version of the bride as pregnant, male, and frog-like haunt the lower right corner of the painting.
Ernst was obsessed with birds and owned a Peruvian ritual mantle of feathers in his private collection. This could have inspired the feathered robe and bird head worn by the bride.
