Max Ernst: The Couple in Lace

The Couple in Lace
Oil on Canvas
1925, 101.5cm x 142cm
Museums Boyman-van Beiningen
Rotterdam, Netherlands

The seated couple, like king and queen on a throne, is a theme Ernst explored in collage, here in painting, and later in sculpture. The oddness of the couple and their attire is what makes it fantastic. Although he gestures toward her, the man is so colorful and interesting, the painting is more about him. They are seated in a stark surreal landscape with a transparent castle wall, once more suggesting the royalty theme.
