Max Ernst: Approachng Puberty

Approaching Puberty
Mixed Media on Paper
1921, 24.5cm x 16.6cm
Private Collection

There is a beautiful collage of a young woman, without her head, only a sensual lock of hair. Her arm pierces a large seed shape, and a red phallus falls nearby. The woman has lost her head, something that does happen to women when they enter puberty and become sexual. The Surrealists were enchanted with child-like women, so the subject of puberty was especially erotic to them, puberty being the years when a woman has just begun to menstruate, before they have grown older. Ernst makes the collage so sumptuous in color and form that you forget any political implications and enjoy the beauty.
