Oberon, Titania, and Puck With Fairies Dancing(detail)
William Blake
1785, 47.5cm x 67.5cm
Watercolor Over Graphite |
Shakespeare
was an important early influence on Blake. This watercolor is
a close reading of Shakespeare's play A Midsummer night's Dream
when the king and queen of fairies look on as other fairies sing
a song 'and dance it trippingly...hand in hand with fairy grace.'
One of the fairies wears butterfly wings in her hair, in reference
to Titania's instructions that butterfly wings should be plucked
and used by a fairy to shield Bottom's eyes from moonbeams. |
