Rene
Ricard writes the following about Clemente and his self portraits,
of which there are many. "Francesco was originally a painter
of self portraits...Francisco seemed happy to go for quite a
while painting himself or his wife, Alba, often introducing a
confusion about who was who.
He slowed down the production
of self-portraits for a while until a couple of summers ago, when
he realized that for many years he'd painted himself the same age
while in fact he had gotten much older. The fact struck him with
a considerable force." You can see the change in this self portrait,
from sensual young man to now, his face lined with more concern,
more knowledge, with the same anxious eyes and sensual lips. |
