Nirvana
Gouache on Silk
1890: 22 x 28.5 cm
Wadsworth Athenaeum, Hartford, Conn.,USA |
The
forehead of the Buddha-like figure has an image of a flower, a
symbol of a peaceful state of being. The figure is unlike a traditional
Buddha, and appears to be influenced by primitive African art.
His head seems to melt into the head of a female nude bather behind
him, suggesting a link between the two. All forms are flattened
in a Japanese print style and the shapes and colors of the painting
make it interesting. Notice the stylized waves in the background
that could be from an oriental print. In this painting Gauguin's
color pallette is particularly exotic with skin tones of gold,
violet, blue, and pink.
