Self
Portrait with Idol
Oil on Canvas
1893: 17 1/4" x 12 7/8"

This
is a brooding self portrait. Like many of his self portraits, he
is in deep thought, here thinking about life and its meaning. The
idol is half painted into the painting, and perhaps symbolizes
Gauguin's ability to understand the primitive world and incorporate
primitive elements into his painting. He had one foot in European
life and modern art, with the other foot wanting to live in Tahiti
and live as a primitive. He yearned to go to places where he could
live on 'ecstasy, calmness and art.'
Other self portraits by Gauguin include the following: Self Portrait
in Hat 1893, Self Portrait with Palette 1894, Self Portrait (as
a prisoner?) 1885, Self Portrait with Portrait of Bernard, Les
Miserables 1888, Self Portrait with Yellow Christ 1889, and Self
Portrait with Halo 1889.
