Paul Gaunguin: The Yellow Christ

The Yellow Christ
Oil on Canvas
1889: 36 1/4" x 28 7/8 "
Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY

This painting was made while Gauguin was sharing a common studio with Van Gogh in Arles. The painting is characteristic of Gauguin's new style with large flat areas of non naturalistic color. The bright yellow landscape with red trees like flowers contrasts with the solemn theme of Christ on the crucifix. Gauguin painted the subject of the yellow Christ many times, including into a self portrait.
