Lamentation Angels:

Detail of The Lamentation by Giotto 1305-06

Fresco. Arena Chapel, Padua

Giotto's angels from 1305 are fantastic and original. He created a new kind of picture space with large, simple forms that were inspired by Gothic statuary. His dramatic angels are full of human emotion, with tiny hands and short arms, they have dwarflike bodies. The dwarfed bodies give the angels an innocence that contrasts with their adult heads and expressions of anguish. The angels magically and fantastically emerge from the sky, made up of expressive patches of heavenly blue.
