Self Portrait With Monkey
Oil On Masonite
1938 16 " x 12 "
Albright Knox Gallery, Buffalo
Frida
made many self portraits and many with her pet monkeys. This
self portrait on masonite has her characteristic dark eyebrows
that meet in the middle like wings. She wears an unusual bone
and shell necklace and the tropical forest behind her gives the
painting a sense of the exotic and primitive. The monkey's eyes
mimic Kahlo's expression, one of apprehension, anxiety, and strength. |
