         Frida and Diego remarried in 1940, when her health began to rapidly deteriorate and Diego wanted to care for her. They kept separate homes and studios, due to Diego's relationships with other women and Frida's need to be independent. Frida and Diego were affectionate, respectful, and sometimes had a sexual relationship.
