Freundschaft
Ink on Paper
1938 40" x 28"
This
is a later work where the symbols are large and humorous. Many of his
shapes are inspired from nature and photography of plankton,
diatoms, seeds, and micro-organisms that German scientific photographers
were making at this time. His symbols were born in the age of
high-resolution microscopy and close-up photography, where the
unusual shapes of microscopic nature are as mysterious as the
cosmos. In this painting the shapes are simplified to make two
unusual faces joined together in friendship. |
