In the
1960s Kusama made unusual sculpture with domestic and ordinary
objects, transforming them into a fantasy. The three dimensional
pods that were sewn on the ironing board are startling because
they look organic like food, such as squash, or like sexual organs.
The texture suggests the
role of the female, cooking, cleaning, and being sexual, but these
are put together in a surreal way, with no reason for the food to
be here or the sexual organs to be there. Her creations are illogical,
but at the same time make sense like a dream makes sense. They act
as clues to what is really going on, perhaps in one's mind,on a
different level of reality. Kusama's images, like dreams, are fantasies
of the mind. |
