Elizabeth Murray: Red Shoe

Red Shoe
1996-97
Concrete, Fiberglass, Wood, and Paint
12' x 9' x 9'
Stuart Collection of Sculpture

This was Murray's first freestanding sculpture, after years of making paintings that seemed to be twisting themselves into space and off of the wall. Murray was invited by the Stuart Collection to concieve the work and she spent 1996 in her New York studio making the sculpture. Murray chose to work with a favorite subject, the shoe. Smooth on the outside, it is roughly finished in its hull-like interior, hinting at worn leather as well as the enclosure of a fort for children to explore. It is a fantasy shoe of the greatest imagination, an inside out shoe that resonates of childhood rhymes and tales.
