Manuel Ocampo: The Work Completes Itself

The Work Completes Itself
2002
acrylic on canvas
122cm. x 152.5 cm.

This beautiful painting by Ocampo is different from earlier work, and shows how he has changed most recently with his work. Ocampo faced obstacles in the art world that he found personally frustrating, as many artists do. His message in the 1990s was a difficult one, but very important for the world to see.
As Ocampo went on painting and developing his imagery, one could see anger and frustration at the art world. The artist is often treated without respect, like a commodity, hot one day, discarded the next. It is a difficult life to lead and maintain through the ups and downs, and Ocampo's art began to tell the story of an artist's life that is painful.
In this painting, it is as if Ocampo has given up on his message of overt symbols, lettering, and even graffiti-like words that made up earlier work. He has reduced the painting to abstraction that is once again beautiful but edgy. We are not sure how the painting completed itself. Did he leave it once and come back to decide it was completed by itself? Did he give up on it? Or, was it as if he felt his hand was guided by the painting in a new way to completion? We don't know the answer.
