Holy Family
Rembrandt Hermenszoon van Rijn
1645, Oil on Canvas
The Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia |
Rembrandt brings a humble and
human sensibility to the nativity scene. The cherubs have no
halos and their bodies have weight to them, more naturalistic
than earlier portrayals of angels. The angels, falling in upon
the scene, give the scene a sense of action and drama it would
otherwise not have. The scene is delicately imbued with the glow
of Rembrandt's golden light. |
