Auguste Rodin: Hand of the Devil

Hand of the Devil
Marble
1902

In the late 1880s, Rodin began to make several studies of hands. Rodin took an interest in fragmentary sculpture, took an interest in isolated hands and how they could express a range of emotions. Hand of the Devil was made in counter point to hands of God, which he made several of.
Hand of the Devil is clutching a small female figure who is struggling to escape. The bony hand contrasts with the sensuous female nude in its grasp. This subject matter echoes Rodin's themes in the Gates of Hell where sensuous human figures struggle to be released from a force that is oppressive and evil.
