Vincent Van Gogh Self Portrait 1887

Self-Portrait
Oil on canvas
41 x 33 cm
Paris: Summer, 1887
Amsterdam: Van Gogh Museum

This portrait was made while Van Gogh was living in Paris with his brother Theo and Vincent was in the process of changing his color palette from darks and inky tones to more brilliant daring colors. Van Gogh had hoped to do some portraiture for commercial purposes during this time and he made many self portraits to sharpen his portraiture skill. The colors in this portrait are still conservative, but more pure than earlier works.
