Vincent Van Gogh Self Portrait 1887

Self-Portrait
Oil on Cardboard
19 x 14 cm
Paris: March-April, 1887
Amsterdam: Van Gogh Museum

This is one of two self portraits made on cardboard, on a very small scale, but nevertheless it is remarkable for its originality and skill. You can gauge the size of the painting by noticing thumb marks on the right hand edge of the painting where Van Gogh held onto it while he worked. There are no costumes or accessories in the painting and the color is thick and unapologetic.
