Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night

Starry Night
Oil on Canvas
1889; 73 x 92 cm
Saint-Remy, June, 1889
New York: The Museum of Modern Art

Painted while he lived and worked in Arles, this painting is a fantasy of night time and a spiritual experience. Van Gogh saw breathtaking images in the sky, and particles in motion that physicists today have only begun to explain. He saw it all in his imagination. The tree grows up like an organic castle to meet the sky and undulate with the stars.
