Vincent Van Gogh Self Portrait as an Artist

Self-Portrait as an Artist
Oil on Canvas
65.5 cm x 50.5 cm
Paris: 1888
Amsterdam: Van Gogh Museum

This is an ambitious self portrait during the time of change by Van Gogh. His colors are brightening, his beard very red, his shirt very blue. The brush stokes, made in obsessive small dabs of lines and dots are remarkable for the emotion and atmosphere they create. The redness in the corners of his eyes show strain, determination, and ill health. He looks to be older than his age by the many lines that cross his brow and line his face.
